7 Days of Genius | Space Oddities: The Genius of Genetics

Sci-fi fantasy is coming closer to reality, as some of the greatest minds join forces to figure out how to endure long sojourns in space and colonize other planets.

Astronaut Scott Kelly returns this March from a year-long mission, while back on Earth, a team of scientists at Weill Cornell Medicine collaborated with his twin brother, Mark, on their own mission: to study if and how their genetic makeup might have been altered, as it believed that spaceflight can cause chemical changes to DNA and RNA, influencing the function of genes involved in metabolism, immune function and gastrointestinal flora. Christopher Mason, Ph.D., will discuss some of their findings so far, as well as potential implications for a future far afield, and for those of us who remain Earthbound.
