American Banlieue: Race, Diplomacy, and U.S. Policy Toward Europe’s Muslims

Are Europe’s Muslims America’s problem? Since the French riots of 2005, American policymakers have expressed concern that racial and ethnic tensions in France—and Western Europe more broadly—will lead to the balkanization and weakening of European allies. Hisham Aidi examines American efforts to integrate Muslims in Europe, and the various initiatives launched by the US government to disseminate the American model of integration and “diversity management.” Hisham Aidi’s research interests include the politics of globalization, north-south relations, and social movements. His latest book is Rebel Music: Race, Empire, and the New Muslim Youth Culture.
