Symphony Space proudly presents the world premiere of an electrifying live musical reading from Ned and Constance Sublette’s powerful new book, The American Slave Coast: A History of the Slave-Breeding Industry, winner of the 2016 American Book Award.

Ned Sublette, acclaimed author of Cuba and Its Music and The World That Made New Orleans, will direct a cast of readers—including Jonathan Demme, Nona Hendryx, Carl Hancock Rux, Kandia Crazy Horse, and Lezlie Harrison—who will bring the book’s many voices to life. Renowned New Orleans composer, musician, and bandleader Donald Harrison will compose, improvise, and direct a live musical counterpoint.

This urgent work reframes our shared history at a particularly dramatic moment in our American lives.
