April Second Sundays Program–Visions of Tomorrow: Art and Commerce at the 1939 New York World’s Fair

Helen Harrison, Director of the Pollack-Krasner House and Study Center and Editor of Dawn of a New Day: The New York World’s Fair, 1939/40, will look at the ways in which artists’ participation in the World’s Fair reflected the planners’ agenda, and what role art played in promoting the Fair’s ostensible aim: “Building the World of Tomorrow.”

This talk has been organized in advance of the special exhibition Patent Holder: Noguchi, World’s Fairs, and the Culture of Innovation, on view at the Museum June 4–September 21, 2014. Timed to the 75th anniversary of the 1939 World’s Fair, the exhibition traces the nearly symbiotic relation in Noguchi’s work with sculpture and design in the years surrounding the Fair.
