Artists and the Archive: Raoul Peck | I Am Not Your Negro

The Schomburg Center is proud to present a conversation with Raoul Peck, director of the Oscar-nominated I Am Not Your Negro, a documentary based on notes from an unpublished book of James Baldwin, his writings and television footage.

This program will explore the arc of Peck’s career—from producing television dramas to serving as Haiti’s Minister of Culture to his direction of feature films like Lumumba (2000), about the first Prime Minister of the Democratic Republic of the Congo Patrice Lumumba.

Cultural producers often find inspiration in archival materials. Peck has successfully used archives and historical literacy to unearth narratives that lead audiences to discover or rediscover socio-political ideas and figures. The evening will feature Peck in conversation with Kevin Young, Director of the Schomburg Center and Paul Holdengräber, Director of LIVE from the NYPL.

On display will be Evidence of Things Seen, a pop-up exhibition of items from the Schomburg’s recent acquisition of James Baldwin’s personal papers.
