Author’s Night | Lighter As We Go: Virtues, Character Strengths, and Aging

Author’s Night: “Lighter As We Go: Virtues, Character Strengths, and Aging” (Oxford University Press, 2014)

Mindy Greenstein, a 52-year-old psychologist, and Jimmie Holland, an 87-year-old psychiatrist, explore the positive aspects of aging from midlife through older age. Their book, Lighter as We Go: Virtues, Character Strengths, and Aging, was selected by The Wall Street Journal as one of the best books of the year on making the most of later life. Contrary to common wisdom, our sense of well-being actually increases in the second half of life. Drawing from the authors’ own personal, intergenerational friendship, as well as a broad array of research from many different areasincluding social psychology, anthropology, neuroscience, humanities, psychiatry, and gerontologythey discuss how we get “lighter” as we grow older.
