Autobiography of the Lower East Side

The Umbra Workshop is considered the spark for the Black Arts movement of the 1960s. Come hear about this short-lived Lower East Side artists’ collective from award-winning poet Rashidah Ismaili, whose first novel is based on her experience with the group and its vibrant location. An immigrant from Benin, Ismaili fashioned a new and global community of playwrights, poets and sculptors. She will be joined by fellow Umbra poet David Henderson and CUNY-Kingsborough professor Eben Wood, who has done extensive research on the Umbra Workshop.

This event is free and seating is first-come, first-served. Doors will open at 6pm. Books will be available for purchase with a 15% discount. Continue the conversation over dinner and drinks! Russ & Daughters Cafe welcomes Tenement Talks visitors. Those with proof of purchase of a book will receive a 10% discount that evening only.
