Avis Berman on 115 Years of Art: An Artist’s History of 8-14 West Eighth Street

The buildings that comprise the New York Studio School have been home to art and artistic activity since the start of the 20th century. This lecture surveys the painters and sculptors who lived and worked in this remarkable art enclave as the buildings themselves evolved through various incarnations.

Avis Berman is the author of Rebels on Eighth Street: Juliana Force and the Whitney Museum of American Art and Edward Hopper’s New York; and co-author and editor of Katharine Kuh’s memoir My Love Affair with Modern Art: Behind the Scenes with a Legendary Curator. Berman prepared the report that earned NYSS its National Historic Landmark status.

This lecture is presented in partnership with the National Trust for Historic Preservation to celebrate the naming of the Whitney Studio as a National Treasure.
