Beef-Eaters: A Cultural History of Food and Identity

In this lecture, Harvard historian Dr. Steven Shapin takes the long view on ideas of “you are what you eat.” From the 16th to 18th centuries, diet was believed to impact health and shape identity. Dr. Shapin will discuss the connections between beef-eating and the creation of a English “national character.” “Beef-Eaters” is the inaugural lecture in The New York Academy of Medicine’s year-long “Eating Through Time” program. This event is free with advance registration at www.nyam.org/events.
