Behind-the-Scenes Tour: An Exclusive Look at Conservation at the New-York Historical Society

On this Behind-the-Scenes Tour, participants will take an intimate and interactive tour of the Conservation Lab where staff preserve some of the most illuminating paper-based treasures of The New-York Historical Society. Most of these collections are in the Society’s Patricia D. Klingenstein Library, one of the oldest and most distinguished in the United States. The Library contains more than three million books, pamphlets, maps, atlases, newspapers, broadsides, sheet music, manuscripts, prints, photographs and architectural drawings.

Witness firsthand how conservators prepare, treat, install, and de-install library and museum paper-based collections for exhibitions and loans, as well as stabilize large collections for storage and use. Try out conservation treatment techniques led by our Conservation staff!

The Library’s Conservation Department is dedicated to the preservation, technical analysis, and research of works of art on paper, parchment, and related materials from the printed, manuscript and graphic collections so that they may be made available for exhibition, education, scholarship, and study.
