Brain Awareness Week: Brains with Music

Brains_with_Music_LogoWhat happens when a love of music meets a passion for science and medicine?

Ted Coons studied for a career in music composition at Yale, but wanted to know how music could influence the feelings of the audience.  He ended up a professor of physiological psychology, studying the neural cells of the brain involved in functions surrounding reward and pain – experiences that drive our behavior.

From playing accordion at age six to playing solo cornet in a wind ensemble, Concetta Tomaino knew all along that she had a love for medicine.  Her two passions fused when she discovered the field of music therapy. When she met staff neurologist, Oliver Sacks at her first job working with Alzheimer’s patients, she knew she had found a kindred spirit.  Together they founded the Institute for Music and Neurologic Function, which she leads to this day.

Dr. Coons is a Professor of Psychology at NYU’s Center for Neural Science. Dr. Tomaino is on the faculty of the Albert Einstein College of Medicine, and Lehman College, CUNY.  Among her many honors, she has received the Lifetime Achievement Award from the American Association for Music Therapy, a Touchstone Award from “Women in Music” for Music Therapy and is the dedicatee of Oliver Sack’s book Musicophilia.

Join us for Brains with Music and listen in on a conversation between these two remarkable people at Baruch Performing Arts Center, Wednesday March 16th at 6:30pm.
