About the Speakers

David Edwards is a creator, scientist, and visionary whose work lies at the boundaries of artistic, design, and scientific practice. His biannual collaborations with artists, designers, chefs, composers, and perfumers reflect his work at Harvard University, where he is professor of the practice of idea translation.

Edwards’s creative work today focuses on sensorial design and the emergence of a new food system, including his invention of air food, edible packaging, and digital scent. He has won many national and international awards and is one of the youngest elected members of the National Academies of Engineering in the USA and in France, a member of the National Academy of Inventors, and a Chevalier of arts and letters of the French Ministry of Culture.

Richard L. Doty, PhD, is director of the University of Pennsylvania’s Smell and Taste Center, and a professor in the department of otorhinolaryngology: head and neck surgery. Doty has authored or co-authored more than four hundred professional publications, including seven books. He is the editor of the third edition of the Handbook of Olfaction and Gustation, considered to be the bible of the chemical senses field, and inventor of the University of Pennsylvania Smell Identification Test, or UPSIT, the gold standard for scent identification testing in medicine. His most recent books are the Neurology of Olfaction (Cambridge University Press, 2009), with Christopher Hawkes, and The Great Pheromone Myth (Johns Hopkins University Press, 2010).
