Jack Hitt, the author of "Off the Road" and a contributing editor to the "New York Times Magazine," "Harper’s," and public radio’s "This American Life," recounts America's many amateur inventors and tinkerers, from Benjamin Franklin's experiments with electricity to Mark Zuckerberg's social media website and profiles the current crop of individuals who are working in their kitchens, basements, and garages.
