Children’s Book Literati Gather to Celebrate Walter Dean Myers

Christopher Myers will host a commemorative celebration for his father, Walter Dean Myers, the renowned New York Times bestselling children’s book author who passed away last year. Fellow children’s book literati will pay tribute by sharing favorite memories and stories about their beloved friend and reading various selections from his work. The occasion will include musical performances, as well as teacher and student participation.

Walter Dean Myers is the author of more than 110 published books, including the New York Times bestseller Monster, the first winner of the Michael L. Printz Award, a National Book Award Finalist and a Coretta Scott King Honor Book. He is the recipient of the Margaret A. Edwards Award for lifetime achievement in writing for young adults and in 2009 delivered the May Hill Arbuthnot Honor Lecture, a distinction reserved for an individual who has made significant contributions to the field of children’s literature. From 2012-2013, he served as the National Ambassador for Young People’s Literature, a post appointed by the Library of Congress. Myers grew up in Harlem, which is the setting for many of his books.
