My City Book Club | The New York Nobody Knows: Walking 6,000 Miles in the City

Sociologist William Helmreich spent four years and wore through nine pairs of shoes walking almost every street of the New York City’s five boroughs: 120,000 blocks, or about 6,000 miles. In walking through its neighborhoods and talking to its residents, Helmreich, a native New Yorker, developed a complex understanding of the city. Join him and journalist Ariel Kaminer to discuss how New York City has changed since the 1970s and the voices and stories of two prevailing groups of peoplethe immigrants and the gentrifiersto which Helmreich attributes the city’s success.

William Helmreich is a professor of sociology at City University Graduate Center (CUNY) and the Colin Powell School for Civic and Global Leadership at the City College of New York. He is the author of fourteen books including The New York Nobody Knows: Walking 6,000 Miles in the City (Princeton, 2013). He has also written about ethnic stereotypes, Holocaust survivors, and black militant organizations.

Ariel Kaminer recently joined BuzzFeed News as Senior Investigations Editor. Before that, she spent 16 years at The New York Times, most recently as a reporter on the Metro desk. She also wrote the City Critic column, a weekly exploration of new urban experiences.
