Combart Art

With Michael D. Fay, Victor Juhasz and Steve Mumford.

Throughout history, artists have documented battles, wars, and the men and women who bravely fought them. Illustrators have been involved with combat art since the beginning of time, going as far back as 500 B.C. when an artist captured the sack of Troy on a water jar. During the Renaissance, illustrators depicted epic scenes of battle on tapestry using elaborate color choices and detail. And in the 1860s, illustrations by Winslow Homer were featured in Harper’s Weekly, allowing a larger public to view scenes from the Civil War.

The tradition of combat art continues today with Michael D. Fay, Victor Juhasz, and Steve Mumford. In a presentation hosted by the Society of Illustrators, the three artists will discuss their experience creating imagery during combat, as well as their time spent recording wounded veterans recovering from their injuries.
