Connecting Commuters and Culture: MTA Arts and Design

lowConnecting Commuters and Culture: MTA Arts & Design, a panel discussion, will explore the 30-year history of the MTA Arts & Design’s commissioned artwork seen daily in subway and commuter stations, trains and buses throughout New York City and its surrounding communities. This entertaining and informative presentation will introduce the MTA capital improvement project and the Percent for Art Program. Through the Percent for Art Program, MTA Arts & Design have installed over 300 permanent projects across 5,000 square miles of the MTA System. Since 1991, they have commissioned 98 illustrators to create original art for their Poster Program exhibited throughout the System and seen by 8.5 million riders daily and 2.6 billion annually.

Panelists include material culture art historian and author William Ayres, Ph.D., Arts & Design Founder Ronay Menschel, Arts & Design Director and author Sandra Bloodworth, and illustrator and children’s book author William Low.

Following the panel discussion the New York’s Underground Art Museum book co-authored by Ms. Bloodworth and Dr. Ayres will be available for purchase and signing.

Connecting Commuters and Culture: MTA Arts & Design will coincide with our “New York View: MTA Arts & Design Illustrates the City” exhibition from June 3-August 15, 2015.
