CPS: Giving: the Needs of Strangers

The New School’s Center for Public Scholarship is pleased to present the 28th Social Research conference, Giving: Caring for the Needs of Strangers, on Thursday, Friday, and Saturday, December 6, 7, and 8, 2012.

The conference is intended to be broadly inclusive, ranging from individual philanthropy, volunteering, international giving, and faith-based giving to state social welfare programs designed to reduce the suffering of citizens. Our speakers—scholars, professionals, and philanthropists—will deepen our understanding of why we do and should give to others, what the roots of altruism are, how we can instill generosity in young people, what the religious and philosophical grounds for caring and giving to others are, as well as looking at what the correct balance between private philanthropy and government welfare programs may be.

The conference will begin with a keynote panel of major philanthropists discussing the need for giving and the global role of philanthropy in the future on Thursday, December 6, 6:00-7:30pm.
