Professor James T. Patterson of Brown University presents the fourth Daniel Patrick Moynihan Lecture, “Daniel Patrick Moynihan’s 1965 Report on ‘The Negro Family’: How Well Does It Stand Up Today?”

Professor Patterson looks at the life and work of Sociologist and Senator Daniel Patrick Moynihan (D-NY), but particularly his controversial 1965 report, “The Negro Family: The Case For National Action,” which looked to address black poverty in America through the community’s lack of nuclear families, traced back to slavery and Jim Crow discrimination. Prof. Patterson will look at how and why the report was and is hotly debated, evaluate its message, and the state of low-income black families and policies concerning such families today.
