Dear Mendl, Dear Reyzl: Yiddish Letter Manuals from Russia and America

At the turn of the 20th century, Jewish families scattered by migration could stay in touch only through letters. But many were unaccustomed to communicating their thoughts in writing. Enter the brivnshtelers, Yiddish-language books of model letters for business, family and even romantic matters. Actors bring these letters to life and Roberta Newman and Alice Nakhimovsky explain their popularity and significance.

This event is free and seating is first-come, first-served. Doors will open at 6pm. Books will be available for purchase with a 15% discount. Continue the conversation over dinner and drinks! Russ & Daughters Cafe welcomes Tenement Talks visitors. Those with proof of purchase of a book will receive a 10% discount that evening only.
