Discoveries from the ESOL Classroom: What All Instructors Can Learn From a Vygotskian-based Performatory Pedagogy

A Half-Day Workshop with Gwen Lowenheim and Carrie Lobman

Over the past two years we have brought the Institute’s Vygotksian-based performatory approach to learning into ESOL (English for Speakers of Other Languages) classrooms of both children and adults. We’ve made some exciting discoveries about the seamlessness of creating a developmental learning community and the learning of language. We’re convinced that these discoveries have value beyond the ESOL classroom. They can give those interested in teaching and learning a new way to see, as well as practical developmental tools that can transform your practice.

Join ESOL teacher Gwen Lowenheim and teacher educator Carrie Lobman for a practical and theoretical workshop on creating fun, rigorous and exploratory communities of performatory learning. Open to teachers, youth workers, adult educators, coaches, group leaders, and anyone curious about learning and teaching.

Gwen Lowenheim, M.S. Ed., is a learning design specialist and a TESOL instructor. She is co-founder/co-director of The Snaps Project, an educational consulting firm. Gwen trains educators in a social therapeutic, performance-based learning approach that brings creativity and innovation into the classroom. Her programs introduce theatrical improvisation, philosophical exploration and group play in developing collaborative teams, language learning and stress management. Her popular online courses draw dozens of creative conversationalists from desktops around the globe. Gwen received her master’s in TESOL at Long Island University.

Carrie Lobman, Ed.D. is associate professor at the Rutgers University Graduate School of Education and the Institute’s director of pedagogy. She is a trained social therapist and a core faculty member in the Institute’s international training programs. A creative teacher and teacher educator, Carrie trains people in the U.S. and internationally in the social therapeutic performance-based approach. She is co-author of Unscripted Learning: Using Improvisation Across the K-8 Curriculum and numerous articles and chapters on the importance of play and performance for learning and development.
