DIY Drones

Join apexart for a workshop led by Grassroots Mapping, a Public Laboratory project. You’ll learn to make a community satellite using a helium balloon and inexpensive digital cameras.

The resulting images will be geo-referenced and stitched into maps that are 100-times higher resolution than those offered by Google, at an extremely low cost. In using these simple tools to create accurate and high-res maps, you’ll help to invert the traditional power structure of cartography by giving the public access to open-source aerial imagery.

Open to all ages!

Grassroots Mapping creates open-source tools to engage the public in exploring and defining their own geography and to promote alternative cartographic practices.

Public Laboratory is a group of activists, educators, technologists, and community organizers. It researches open source hardware and software tools that generate knowledge about community environmental health. Their goal is to increase the ability of underserved communities to identify, redress, and remediate environmental concerns. Public Laboratory achieves this by providing online and offline training, education and support, and by focusing on locally relevant outcomes that emphasize human capacity and understanding.
