Drawing from Practice: Architects and the Meaning of Freehand

Launching the General Society of Mechanics and Tradesmen’s 2015/2016 Lecture Series will be author Michael Welton, who will be discussing his new book, Drawing from Practice, which explores and illuminates the ways that 26 diverse renowned architects use freehand drawing to shape the world. This event is promoted in partnership with the New York Landmarks Conservancy and the Institute of Classical Architecture and Arts. Mr. Welton will give a short presentation on his book, to be followed by a Q&A and book-signing; admission is free.

Using drawings and architecture from every architectural generation practicing today, Mr. Welton traces the tactile sketch, from conception to finished product, through words, images and photographs that reveal the creative process in action. Architects featured include Deborah Berke, Daniel Libeskind, Richard Meier, Bill Pedersen, Suchi Reddy, Tod Williams and Billie Tsien.

In an age of cutting-edge technology, Mr. Welton’s book and presentation will be a refreshing reminder that drawing by hand remains an enduring art form integral to the design process.

“Michael Welton’s deeply researched and thoughtfully composed book brings us inside the work and process of the nation’s esteemed architects. It is a powerful reminder of all the humanity that goes into the art, beyond the science and the mathematics and even the beauty. Through the architects’ drawings and words, we experience a rare intimacy.” Lynn Medford, Editor, Washington Post Magazine.

Michael Welton writes about architecture, art and design for national and regional publications. His news articles, feature stories and op-ed criticisms have appeared in The New York Times, The Washington Post, The Huffington Post, Dwell, Architectural Record, Ocean Home Magazine, Metropolis, Interior Design, Inform and the Raleigh News & Observer.

The Lectures start at 6:30pm in The General Society Library and will be followed by a reception. Advance registration is recommended: admission for this lecture is free. To register please contact the General Society at: 212-840-1840, x2 or e-mail: [email protected]
