Duologues On Kawara: Alfredo Jaar and Tom McDonough

Conceived by exhibition curator Jeffrey Weiss, this dynamic series of paired talks positions On Kawara within an interdisciplinary world context. Diverse engagements with the artist’s work include themes of everyday life, globalism, politics, language, travel and pictorial abstraction.

Two concerning themes surface when considering the politicized context of Kawara’s practice: the post-conceptual representation of world events, including war, and the Situationist model of socio-cultural critique concerning the “practice of everyday life.” Artist and activist Alfredo Jaar and writer/critic Tom McDonough discuss these themes in relation to their own projects.
