Thomas Eakins (1844-1916) is often cited as one of nineteenth-century America’s most accomplished artists, with virtually his entire output centered on the personalities and institutions of Philadelphia. This talk will consider Thomas Eakins’s student years in Paris, along with the homage he paid to his French experiences both in later genre pictures and by sending works there for criticism, exhibition and sale. It will close by examining the late portrait Clara, which in 1931 the Philadelphia Museum of Art gave to the Louvre.
