The Empire of the Senses

Author Alexis Landau in conversation with poet Deborah Garrison:

Landau’s historical novel The Empire of the Senses tells the story of Lev Perlmutter, an assimilated, cultured German Jew, who enlists to fight in World War I. The novel then jumps to Berlin in the late 1920s, where Lev, his gentile wife and their children grapple with questions of Jewish identity amid the Nazis’ rise to power.
