An Evening with Bruce Jenkins: The Films of Marcel Broodthaers

On the occasion of the exhibition Marcel Broodthaers: A Retrospective, MoMA presents a program of the artist’s films. Broodthaers’s interest in film predated his entry into the visual arts, in 1964, and it continued to play a central role in his artistic production during the next 12 years. Until his death in 1976, Broodthaers made numerous films in connection with his work in other mediums, often casting himself as the protagonist. This program features films produced throughout the artist’s career, including his last film, La Bataille de Waterloo, shot in his 1975 work Décor: A Conquest by Marcel Broodthaers, which is on view as part of the retrospective. Film scholar Bruce Jenkins joins Christophe Cherix, The Robert Lehman Foundation Chief Curator of Drawings and Prints and co-curator of the exhibition, to provide an overview of Broodthaers’s cinematic work.
