Exhibit Opening & Tour: St. Paul’s: Community of Faith, Faith in Community

Architectural historian, author, and exhibition curator Tom Mellins introduces a new exhibit at St. Paul’s Chapel, an exploration of its 250 years of ministry from its time as a chapel-of-ease during the early days of the republic, to a home-away-from-home for recovery workers sifting through the rubble of the World Trade Center, to a favorite space to worship for families with children.

On display are photos of St. Paul’s as the surrounding city changed over the years, as well as images and illustrations of significant events including George Washington’s inauguration in 1789 and a visit from President George W. Bush and First Lady Laura Bush in 2006, and significant objects including a fire bucket thought to have helped prevent the building from burning down during the Great Fire of 1776.  [Pop-up exhibits on the first Thursday of each month from 11 AM – 1 PM will display treasures from the archives highlighting various ministries and events from 250 years of St. Paul’s Chapel’s history.]

A recently restored statue of St. Paul—thought to be one of the earliest American sculptures—watches over all from his spot on the balcony.
