Thomas Wartenberg, expert in the philosophy of film, will discuss the distinctive contributions to cinematography of Mexican cinematographer Gabriel Figueroa (1907–1997). Professor Wartenberg will show how Figueroa creates a unique synthesis between two important cinematic traditions proposed by French critic and theorist André Bazin: one emphasizing the image and one focused on realism.
