Film Production Designer, Kalina Ivanov

The Labor, Literature and Landmark Lecture Series 2014/2015 begins with Film and Television Production Designer, Kalina Ivanov, exploring the fascinating world of film and television production design. This award-winning designer is known for her film collaborations with Robert Redford, and her work on Grey Gardens, Little Miss Sunshine, Silence of the Lambs and many other projects.

KALINA IVANOV, the noted film and television production designer earned an Emmy Award and Art Director’s Guild award for her work on the HBO production, Grey Gardens, starring Jessica Lange and Drew Barrymore, directed by Michael Sucsy.  She also designed his following film, The Vow, and the Golden Globe-nominated television show Smash (season two).  She has had a long collaboration with director Robert Redford, beginning as the storyboard artist on both Quiz Show and The Horse Whisperer, and culminating as the production designer on his epic film, The Conspirator.  Other notable film designs include work for the Oscar-nominated Little Miss Sunshine, Rabbit Hole, Made Of Honor, Smoke, and many others.  She most recently collaborated on the upcoming movies Max and Poltergeist.

During the lecture, Ms. Ivanov will describe her design philosophy, which is to immerse herself in the script, fully embody the characters and reveal their history through color, texture and architecture in a visually original way.

Kalina Ivanov was born in Sofia, Bulgaria.  During the height of communism, she escaped with her parents and landed in New York.  She received her BFA from NYU/TSOA – Design Department and her MFA from NYU/TSOA – Film Department, both with honors.  While in film school, Ms. Ivanov met director Jonathan Demme and became the storyboard artist for his Oscar-winning film Silence Of The Lambs.  From there her career expanded beyond storyboarding into visual consulting and production design.  For more information, please visit www.kalinaivanov.com.

The Labor component of the 2014 Labor, Literature and Landmarks lecture series will provide a behind-the-scenes look at the creative industries in New York, focusing on the talented artists that deliver the heartbeat of theater, television and cinema.  The series entitled “A Day in the Life of…’ is curated in collaboration with Beverly Miller, Local USA-829 President and the United Scenic Artists-829.

The Lectures start at 6:30 P.M. in The General Society Library, 20 West 44th Street (Between 5th and 6th Avenues), Manhattan and will be followed by a reception.
