General Society Artisan Lecture Series Launches This Fall With Metroplitan Museum Conservator Marijn Manuels

36x1x0The General Society Artisan Lecture Series Season 2015/16 will launch with Marijn Manuels, the Metropolitan Museum of Art Conservator, who will discuss the conservation and installation of the Museum’s Worsham-Rockefeller Dressing Room on Thursday, November 12th at 6:30pm in the General Society Library at 20 West 44th Street, New York City.

The Worsham-Rockefeller Dressing Room is one of the very few intact Gilded Age New York City interiors. The opulent room is the centerpiece of the exhibition Artistic Furniture of the Gilded Age, opening at the metropolitan Museum of Art on December 15th, 2015. The room, a complete work of art, with its elaborate woodwork and decorations, is rare surviving commission by New York-based cabinetmaker and decorator George A. Schastey (1839-1894). The special exhibition will introduce Schastey – an important but forgotten maker of high-end interiors – to scholars and the general public alike.

In Mr. Manuels’ talk, he will provide a special sneak preview of this jewel box of dressing room, accessioned by The Metropolitan Museum in 2009. He will discuss the multidisciplinary conservation and installation effort, which started in 2013 and will culminate in the room’s pubic opening. He will detail the process of re-installation and the many challenges of conserving the intricate fine details of the room, originally built in 1881.

Mr. Manuels specializes in American Furniture and Interiors; he received his training in Amsterdam and joined Metropolitan in the Department of Objects Conservation in 1996. He has worked on landmark exhibitions including Honoré Lannuier, Cabinetmaker from Paris (1998), Art and the Empire City (2000), John Townsend (2005), and Duncan Phyfe (2011) – as well as the ten-year renovation and reinstallation of the American Wing that was completed in 2012.

The Artisan Lectures for the remainder of the series include:
