De Chirico’s paintings beg us to solve riddles: their titles, mysterious images, and strange symbols. Solving his riddles and deciphering his symbols, however, leads either to banal answers or to frustration. De Chirico, in fact, questioned traditional art historical methods and even the basic idea of interpretation. By confronting his painting and writing, this gallery session explores possible strategies for approaching his art.

Gallery Sessions, impromptu interactions facilitated by Museum educators that explore the creative process, art history, and the experience of art, take place daily in select galleries. Groups meet in the galleries noted on the schedule. Gallery Sessions are free with Museum admission. No registration is required.
