From God of Vengeance to Indecent

On February 19, 1923, theatergoers witnessed Broadway’s first lesbian kiss at the English-language premiere of the God of Vengeance, a play by the Polish-born, Yiddish writer Sholem Asch. Days later, the Vice Squad of the NYPD arrested and successfully prosecuted the entire cast on obscenity charges. Asch’s provocative drama and the legal controversy surrounding it has inspired theater artists ever since. This May, Pulitzer-Prize winning author Paula Vogel’s new play Indecent, which captures the drama surrounding the 1923 production of God of Vengeance, will premiere at the Vineyard Theater in downtown Manhattan. Join Vogel and Rebecca Taichman, the director of Indecent, for a conversation about the radical possibilities of Yiddish theater with noted scholars Marvin Carlson and Joel Berkowitz.
