Halpern Operas Based on Sophocles

Composer/librettist Martin Halpern presents two chamber operas, The Death of Ajax and The Death of Oedipus, both freely based on the earliest and last plays of the great Greek dramatist Sophocles. In each opera, the title character’s death brings a redemptive end to his suffering, and those he leaves behind find comfort in a compassionate bonding. Singers are Alisa Peterson, Scott Joiner, Jim Trainor and John Torres, accompanied by pianist Earl Buys. Halpern earned a Ph.D in English and American Literature from Harvard, and spent decades teaching in universities, mainly Brandeis in Mass.  Since his retirement in 1994, the native New Yorker has devoted his time to composing plays and operas, frequently drawn from great works of literature.
