How Should We See People?

chrysler-bldg-top-and-other-bldgs-135x300This presentation features a dramatic reading of “Aesthetic Realism Looks at Things: Seeing & Grabbing” by Eli Siegel. In it, he said, “There is that in us which says we don’t want to enjoy anything until we can grab it and have it and manage it. But is the purpose of a person seeing or having? It is seeing. To see is to make things part of oneself through knowing them.”

And there will be a re-enactment of an Aesthetic Realism Lesson which was given the title “Mrs. Wilkes & Her Mother” And it has this: “Does your mother think you try to put her aside? We look on people either as conveniences for ourselves, or as realities in their own right which are good for us to know.” —Eli Siegel

And architect Anthony Romeo speaks on “Can We Be Serious & Lighthearted Too? Yes! Look at the Chrysler Building” In this richly illustrated talk, Mr. Romeo says “This building says: You can be dignified, serious, and still be playful, even mischievous. In fact, when you’re truly serious, that’s when you’ll be most graceful.”
