Idra Novey & Stephen O’Connor at Book Culture

Independent bookstore Book Culture welcomes authors Stephen O’Connor (Thomas Jefferson Dreams of Sally Hemings) and Idra Novey (Ways to Disappear). O’Connor and Novey will read from their books and discuss the arts of giving criticism and making the best of receiving it.

Thomas Jefferson Dreams of Sally Hemings explores the relationship between the two title figures, in whose story the conflict between the American ideal of equality and the realities of slavery and racism played out in the most tragic of terms. This is a profoundly original exploration of the many ways that the institution of slavery warped the human soul, as seen through the story of Thomas Jefferson and Sally Hemings.

His important and beautifully written novel is a deep moral reckoning, a story about the search for justice, freedom and an ideal world and about the survival of hope even in the midst of catastrophe.

Ways to Disappear follows the celebrated Brazilian writer Beatriz Yagoda, deep in gambling debt and last seen holding a suitcase and a cigar and climbing into an almond tree. She abruptly vanishes. In snowy Pittsburgh, her American translator Emma hears the news and, against the wishes of her boyfriend and Beatriz’s two grown children, flies immediately to Brazil.

Idra Novey’s exhilarating debut is both a novel of ideas and a novel of intrigue, an innovative combination of mystery, noir, and humor.

This is a free event and both Stephen O’Connor and Idra Novey will be available to sign books following the discussion.
