Kenjiro Okazaki: Noguchi’s Memorial to the Dead of Hiroshima

Japanese artist Kenjiro Okazaki discuss his extensive research into Noguchi’s 1952 proposal for a cenotaph at the Hiroshima Peace Memorial Park, in Japan. Noguchi’s design, created at the behest of architect Kenzo Tange, was rejected by public officials at the time and remains unrealized.

The Noguchi Museum’s Hiroshima Memorial gallery has recently been reinstalled to incorporate a model of the site fabricated under Okazaki’s direction—which, for the first time, makes Noguchi’s overall scheme comprehensible.
