wigg-insdorfAlthough best known as the brilliant comedienne from “Saturday Night Live” (2005-13), Kristen Wiig has been demonstrating big-screen dramatic range as well, from Bridesmaids (which she co-wrote and co-produced) to Girl Most Likely and The Secret Life of Walter Mitty.

In Hateship Loveship, a quietly affecting drama adapted by Mark Poirier from Alice Munro’s 2001 short story, she plays a shy caregiver hired by a widower (Nick Nolte) to look after his granddaughter (Hailee Steinfeld, Oscar nominee for True Grit). A cruel hoax leads her into a romantic situation with unexpected results.

The Hollywood Reporter praised the “beautifully restrained performance from a dowdy Kristin Wiig as an Iowa caretaker who’s tricked into love,” in a film that co-stars Guy Pearce, Jennifer Jason Leigh, Sami Gayle and Christine Lahti.
