Launch of John Hume: Irish Peacemaker

An international group of scholars and policymakers launch John Hume: Irish Peacemaker,  “a fascinating insight into Hume’s role through the darkest days of the Troubles…to the bright new dawn revealed in the Good Friday Agreement of 1998.” (Independent)

John Hume, civil rights activist, founding member of the SDLP and leading politician in Northern Ireland during the long period of the Troubles, gained worldwide recognition and respect for his principled opposition to the use of violence as a means of resolving the deep divisions between the people of Northern Ireland.

Hume’s constant message was the need to heal sundered relationships between the people of Ireland, north and south, and between the people of Ireland and Britain.

John Hume: Irish Peacemaker assesses Hume’s role throughout the Troubles as he campaigned in Ireland, Europe and the US to influence politicians and opinion makers in the cause of justice and peace.

To celebrate the new volume, Glucksman Ireland House NYU hosts a panel discussion with editors Seán Farren and Denis Haughey, contributors Paul Arthur and Nancy Soderberg (TBC), with participation by Glucksman Ireland House NYU’s Prof. Joe Lee and Loretta Brennan Glucksman.
