Lesser-Known Verdi Gems: Arias and Duets—Giovanna D’Arco & Il Corsaro

Presented by Jane Marsh
Duration: 1.5 hours

Part of the Lesser-Known Verdi Gems: Arias and Duets series

Giuseppe Verdi was known for being a composer that showed an overwhelming respect for the vocal instrument. Whether it was “Sempre Libera,” Violetta’s aria in La Traviata,/i>, or the Finale in Falstaff, he always showed a keen awareness for tight musical and theatrical lines. This course will explore the lesser known Verdi gems, looking specifically at the three-part aria form and stimulating duets of his early period as well as the confrontational duets of his middle period. Join Jane Marsh in this two-part series as she explores the exceptionally stunning glory of these little known Verdi operas.

In this first lecture, Jane Marsh will explore two operas from Verdi’s early period,Giovanna D’Arco (Joan of Arc) and Il Corsaro (The Corsair). Based on Schiller’s play Die Jungfrau von Orleans, Giovanna D’Arco, is Verdi’s seventh opera. The focus is on Joan, a country girl who leads French troops in conquest of English forces. In Verdi’s thirteenth opera, Il Corsaro, a swashbuckling Greek and dashingly intimidating pirate visualizes a quest to love and conquest while sailing the Aegean seas. Based on Lord Byron’s famous poem The Corsair, it ends in the pirate Corrado’s loss of power.
