Levitation as Performance Art: The Strange Case of St. Joseph of Cupertino, with Author Michael Grosso

In the annals of superpowers, the greatest and best documented example on record is probably the case of St. Joseph of Cupertino (Italy, 1603-1663). In tonight’s talk, author Michael Grosso will present accounts of Joseph’s reported marvels, especially his paradigm-busting levitations. Michael will demonstrate how the music, painting, sculpture, architecture and spiritual ferment of St. Joseph’s day created the stage-set for bringing out these superpowers. It will also detail how The Saint’s genius for ecstasy, obsession with the Madonna, and sexual sublimation led him to transcend a childhood of sickness and misery to achieve European superstardom as what might be described as a mystic performance artist. The talk will conclude with thoughts on what Joseph and his phenomena signify for seekers in an era of disbelief.
