Life After Life in Prison: A Conversation on Women’s Incarceration

Women are the fastest growing segment of the incarcerated population, increasing at nearly double the rate of men since 1985.  Currently, more than one million women in the United States are imprisoned or under the control of the criminal justice system.   At this panel, experts from inside and out will discuss the experience of women in the prison system, including the circumstances that they face prior to conviction, while in the system, and after their release.  A Q&A will follow the discussion.

On display will be Life After Life in Prison, a Photo Essay, a gallery of portraits of formerly incarcerated women taken by criminal defense lawyer and photographer, Sara Bennett, who is a panelist. The pictures track the subjects as they resume the routine of life outside prison walls.

This program is presented in partnership by The Impact Center for Public Interest Law at New York Law School, The New York Women’s Foundation and Sara Bennett.

Opening Speakers

  • Deborah N. Archer, Professor of Law, Dean of Diversity and Inclusion, Co-Director of the Impact Center for Public Interest Law, and Director of the Racial Justice Project at New York Law School
