@MACAULAY Author Series: Rick Moody with A.O. Scott

On December 10th, the @MACAULAY AUTHOR SERIES welcomes author Rick Moody (The Ice Storm, The Black Veil), who will read from and discuss Hotels of North America, his first novel in five years. In this gloomily comic saga, Reginald Edward Morse, a “solidly middle-aged” former financial trader, discovers a new career as a top-10 reviewer on the fictional website RateYourLodging.com. This loner’s many and eccentric reviews reveal as much, if not more, about identity, intimacy, loneliness, and love as they do about Reginald’s critical globetrotting. Moody gradually intertwines fragments of a life: past career pursuits, a marriage and family collapsed, drinking’s cruel tricks, and an elusive true love (for Reginald a woman known only as “K”). But when Reginald vanishes, leaving us to puzzle out his baffling life, the distinction between fabrication and reality is up for grabs.

Hilarious, provocative, and moving, Hotels of North America offers an Instagram of our tech-crazed, digital world—connected everyplace except where the personal is concerned. Joining Moody to discuss his book following his reading will be acclaimed New York Times culture writer A.O. Scott, author of the forthcoming Better Living Through Criticism: How to Think about Art, Pleasure, Beauty, and Truth.

The December 10th event, which is free and open to the public, begins at 7PM at CUNY’s Macaulay Honors College, 35 West 67th Street (between Central Park West and Columbus). It will include a book signing and informal reception. Books will be available for purchase; reservations are advised.
