Miniatures, Models, and Magic in Ancient Egypt

death in egyptIn the land of giant pyramids and singing colossai, you would be surprised to know that often the smallest of things carried great power. This lecture will explore the dollhouse like miniatures and models that are found in Ancient Egyptian tombs that were created in antiquity with an incredible level of precision and care. What purpose did they serve and how can they give us better knowledge of the elusive parts of ancient culture?

This lecture is part of the Morbid Anatomy Museum’s “Death and The Occult in the Ancient World” Series.

Speaker Ava Forte Vitali completed her Master’s Degree in Art History and Archaeology, with a specialization in the Egyptian and Classical World, at the Institute of Fine Arts, New York University. Her research interests include the interaction of the physical and spirit world in Ancient Egypt, archaeology of the household, and Ancient Egyptian domestic and ancestor cults, on which her Master’s focused. She has excavated at sites in Egypt and Turkey, and has worked as a Collections Manager for Greek and Roman Art at the Metropolitan Museum, and currently works as a Project Manager in Cultural Heritage Digitization. She is writing a contribution on the Arts and Archaeology of Ancient Egypt, for an upcoming text book on the introduction to Art History.
