How Much Does Our Self Include?

This presentation of Aesthetic Realism features a dramatic reading of poet and critic Eli Siegel’s moving lecture “BazarovLogic & Passion: a Study of Turgenev’s Fathers & Sons.” In it, Mr. Siegel said: “The important thing about this book is the character of Bazarov. He wants to be honest, but he doesn’t see that honesty means the inclusion of the mysterious part of oneself.  One of the purposes of Aesthetic Realism is to show that to be scientific can go along with welcoming the most puzzling and intricate feelings a person can have.”

And jazz pianist Alan Shapiro will present, “Roughness & Sweetness in Louis Armstrong’s Rendition of ‘I Can’t Give You Anything But Love.’ ”  Mr. Shapiro says, “Sometimes Armstrong’s voice sounds like an instrument as he leaves behind the words and scats. Yet we feel that the way he changes the song adds to it, definitely and lovably.”

And there will be poetry, and more!
