Nerd Nite NYC: Everything I Know About Bioethics, I Learned From The Golden Girls

If George Michael, John Cusack, and Betty White lived in NYC, they would definitely want to attend our next Nerd Nite at Littlefield (in Gowanus/Park Slope).  Our April 29th Nerd Nite NYC features an exploration of the misunderstood sexy sax of ‘80s pop music (ah, Careless Whisper), how the Golden Girls can you teach you everything you need to know about bioethics…obviously, and the phenomenon that is the $2-bill (‘I want my two dollars’).  And trivia is back too, so bring some pals, form a team, and win some not-so-bad prizes.  This is going to be a fun one, particularly for you older millennials and younger gen X’ers.

Everything I Know About Bioethics, I Learned from The Golden Girls
by Elizabeth Yuko

Description: Picture it: Miami, 1985. Four women in their golden years tackle tricky issues concerning health, medicine, and decision-making. Bioethicist Dr. Elizabeth Yuko will use clips to provoke discussion and illustrate how, over the course of the show’s seven-season run, Dorothy, Sophia, Blanche, and Rose navigated topics like artificial insemination, HIV/AIDS, sexual health, end-of-life care, cryopreservation and more. This year marks the 30th anniversary of The Golden Girls’ debut season, so why not take the opportunity to learn from its protagonists about profound questions of morality?

Bio: Dr. Elizabeth Yuko is a bioethicist at the Fordham University Center for Ethics Education, specializing in reproductive ethics and the ethics of human enhancement. She is a member of the Board of Directors of the Global Bioethics Initiative, the founding and senior editor of Ethics & Society, and serves as an external ethics expert for the European Research Council. Yuko has written for publications such as The Atlantic, Ms. Magazine, Salon, Refinery29, The Huffington Post, and The Establishment, and hosts a comedic lecture series called “Let’s Get Ethical!” at Q.E.D. in Astoria, Queens. Her show, “Everything I Know About Bioethics I Learned from The Golden Girls” was named one of the top-10 events of fall 2015 by The Village Voice.

Let’s Get Saxy
by Joseph “Joey” DeGrandis

Description: Who doesn’t love that sexy, nostalgic feeling a timeless saxophone riff can bring? If you have no idea what I’m talking about, please Google “Careless Whisper.” In this Nerd Nite, we’ll briefly explore the history and evolution of this beloved woodwind instrument, namely its very prominent and memorable presence in pop music of the 1980s. So have your #fbf hashtag ready, as we travel 88MPH back in time to the golden age of the glorious saxophone!

Bio: Joey grew up in a suburb of Cleveland, Ohio and moved to New York in 2003 to attend Fordham University. Although I’ve lived in 3 out of 5 NY boroughs, I’ve called the East Village home for the last 4 1/2 years. I was featured on 60 Minutes in 2014, along with 3 others, as part of a “memory wizards” panel (I bet I can tell you what day of the week you were born on!) In my free time, I love reading, writing, traveling, singing (I’m a member of the NYC Gay Men’s Chorus), and exploring this endlessly diverse and crazy town we call home. During the week, I work as a Marketing Writer for a cloud-based technology firm in Manhattan.

The $2 Bill: Friend or Foe?

by Heather McCabe

Description: The enigmatic $2 bill: Maybe you have one in a shoebox under your bed — or in a part of your wallet that you never access. Or maybe you believe its existence is just an unconfirmed rumor. Have you seen one? Have you ever spent one? Is it real? Is it fake? Is it good luck, or is it bad luck? Maybe it was just something secretly printed in your grandpa’s basement and stuffed into your birthday cards as a hoax when you were a naïve child. What happens when a $2 bill appears in a cash transaction…or does it ever? Tonight we’ll uncover the truth about this incomparable bill — and you might emerge with more than just knowledge.

Bio: Heather McCabe is an advocate for using the $2 bill. Her blog, TwoBuckaroo.com, chronicles the reactions she and other $2 bill enthusiasts encounter when spending this unusual currency. She and Two Buckaroo have been featured in The New York Times, Mental Floss, Pacific Standard, the Howl podcast “Dead Presidents with Daniel O’Brien,” and The Two Dollar Bill Documentary, screening at film festivals throughout the country (catch it in NYC on April 17 as part of the Manhattan Film Festival). She works as a writer and editor in New York City and runs the Humans Against Music karaoke night in Brooklyn.
