New York’s Long-Lost Industrial Revolution

Join Newtown Creek Alliance Historian Mitch Waxman for an intense exploration of one of Newtown Creek’s least known tributaries—Dutch Kills. During the three-hour session around Long Island City (L.I.C.), you’ll cover about three miles of Brooklyn and Queens and see where the Industrial Revolution in America was actually set.

Led by Mitch, you’ll uncover the then-and-now of the Dutch Kills tributary, once known as the “workshop of the United States.” A central maritime artery of Long Island City, Dutch Kills is surrounded by factories, rail yards, and is crossed by century-old bridges—and all just a few blocks from the hustle-and-bustle of Queens Plaza.
