NYC LGBT Historic Sites Project

The LGBT community is vastly underrepresented on the National Register of Historic Places — of the over 80,000 listed sites, only ten have been included for their primary association with LGBT history. NYC LGBT Historic Sites Project is commemorating important LGBT sites, as well as those sites that document the diverse LGBT communities’ significant influence and contribution to American history and culture.

Project directors Ken Lustbader, author of Landscape of Liberation: Preserving Lesbian and Gay History in Greenwich Village, and Andrew Dolkart, historic preservation professor in the Graduate School of Architecture, Planning and Preservation at Columbia University will be joined by project manager Amanda Davis to discuss the efforts to bring attention to what has been a largely invisible history. Site types include bars, clubs, restaurants, residences of notable figures, and community and public spaces.

Donald Albrecht, curator of Gay Gotham at the Museum of the City of New York, will introduce the evening.
