NYPL Hosts “Love and Science, a Memoir” for Immigrant Heritage Month

In conjunction with Immigrant Heritage Month, Jan Vilcek chronicles his journey from refugee to philanthropist, and talks about why immigrant contributions are vital to American society. This illustrated lecture based on his memoir, Love and Science, tells two intertwined stories—one personal, one professional—how, improbably, the enormous obstacles he faced went hand-in-hand with a charmed life of scientific discovery. As a child, the author survived World War II in Nazi-occupied Czechoslovakia, grows up under Communist rule, then thrives as an immigrant scientist in America and contributes to the development of a blockbuster drug that helps millions of patients with autoimmune disorders. In the process, he acquires material wealth that he never aspired to, catapulting him into a new world of philanthropy and art collecting.
