Obscura Day 2015: Morris-Jumel Mansion
The Morris-Jumel Mansion was built in 1765 by a British military officer, Roger Morris. In fear for their lives as British loyalists at the beginning of the Revolutionary War they fled to Yonkers, leaving the home to then-General George Washington to use as a temporary headquarters.
Soon, the home was confiscated and sold to a French merchant and his mistress. Years later, the home would be the address for former vice-president Aaron Burr. Throughout the years, the home would be turned into a farmhouse, a tavern and finally a museum.
This is just some of the history that lies within the walls of the Morris-Jumel Mansion. The gardens and mansion have been restored and today the house is a museum dedicated to preserving the memories of the oldest residence in Manhattan.
